The Outer Darkness is out now on Google Play

The sci-fi roguelike about boarding dead ships is out now on Google Play, and it's free. On iPhone and iPad, it's still open for pre-order.

The Outer Darkness is out now on Google Play, and it’s free. It launches on Halloween, which feels right for a game about ships full of things that should be dead.

An event aboard a derelict in The Outer Darkness: a voice on the comms, and a choice to answer it or leave.

Get it

Get The Outer Darkness on Google Play. If you pre-registered, Google Play lets you know it’s out, and installs it for you if you chose that when you signed up.

If you played the open test, thank you. Every run you played and every report you sent helped get it here.

What you’re boarding

Dead ships drift back out of the dark with their holds full and their crews still aboard.

  • Scan the dark for derelicts, each with its size, threat and conditions: low oxygen, darkness, infestations.
  • Board a new seeded ship every run, with fights, loot, supplies and rooms where something on the comms asks to be let in.
  • Fight in turn-based rounds, aiming each shot at a body part. Blind a Stalker, cripple a Crawler’s legs, crack a Warden’s shell.
  • Get out with whatever you can carry. Die, and everything you brought stays aboard.
  • Upgrade your ship with the salvage, and go back out.

A boarding takes 5 to 15 minutes, it’s played one-handed in portrait, and a run saves when you stop. There’s no pay-to-win.

On iPhone

The Outer Darkness is still open for pre-order on the App Store for iPhone and iPad. Pre-order it, and it downloads on its own when it comes out.
